Borne from the first lockdown in 2020 we wanted to find a way to allow us to still provide practical session for those who had been attending our weekly craft sessions, prior to us having to cancel all the sessions as the centre had to close its doors.
Our Crochet, Knit & Stitch and Always Yarning sessions, hosted by Gemma of It Started with a Stitch are free sessions that run weekly at Welholme Works.
Whilst these sessions are now back on in person at the centre, there’s still a number of people who cannot access these workshops. We can provide an ‘at home’ version of these by packaging up the supplies and materials needed and deliver them to doorsteps. During lockdown, we provided hundreds of free Grab Bags and received national press coverage for it!
During the months that we’ve been closed to the public, we’ve expanded the project and created so many more versions of the original Grab Bag. We’ve handed out pom pom kits, crochet kits, knitting and crochet supplies, children’s reading books and Easter Bonnet making bags!
The Grab Bag project has helped us keep a physical link with service users, as not all content can be taken online to be enjoyed and accessed. As we work on lots of community projects, such as blankets for the homeless and knitting scarves to raise money for Versus Arthritis – these Grab Bags have enabled people to enjoy crafting at home, keeping busy and also contributing to the number of items that we can then donate to the YMCA Humber and Harbour Place.
Funding was awarded to us to allow us to grow this project and we’re proud to be able to provide these Grab Bags for free and will continue to do so!
